Saturday Songwriting: Rhythm Changes & The Rainbow Connection

The Rainbow Connection is one of those songs that I fell in love with a long time ago. Hearing it is sort of like running into an old friend and not being quite sure how I’ve let so much time pass without reaching out. It’s just a sweet song.

There’s a classic chord progression at the heart of The Rainbow Connection called “Rhythm Changes.” In the ’40s and ’50s, the Rhythm Changes chords were used almost as much as “The Axis of Awesome” chords are used today. Not just in popular songs of the day either, they evolved into one of the most used changes in jazz.  The sheet below talks all about them.

Enjoy!
