I’m stopped at a red light, and a car pulls up next to me. Its engine revs. The driver is goading me. I hear the engine rev again.
What’s happening in my body? Am I excited, scared, (maybe bored?) Will I meet the provocation and rev my engine back? This is activation, it’s my fight, flight or fear response and it spreads easily.
Activation is compelling. It sells newspapers, magazines, and movies. But what is the outcome if I take part in a street race? An alternative is to engage my mission, to engage work that moves me.
When I engage my mission the street races of life fail to engage me.
When i engage my mission I don’t have to pay attention to every stranger’s provocation.
When I engage my mission I can do my Work.
